God’s megaphone

Jim and I are playing catch-up with some devotional readings because he was out of town over the weekend. (We typically do these readings together outloud…) We’re using two different devotionals, one of them being selected excerpts from C. S. Lewis’s writings.

From

    The Problem of Pain

by C. S. Lewis:

“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

Are we listening?

  1. And yet we still, all too often, respond, “huh?”

  2. “huh?” is ok, cuz from my experience He repeats it. It is the willfull ignoring of his voice that is a problem. Anything else He can work with.

But I love that line you quoted….I always remember that line from “Shadowlands” and how C.S. Lewis grew in his experiential knowledge of that truth through his relationship with Joy Davidman (?) and her cancer. True whether it is truly pain or even the anticipation of “possible” pain! πŸ™‚ But I am SO glad He will not let His children slumber and miss what He has to say. He is a faithful father. Amen?! πŸ™‚ Love you guys!

  3. Yes, it’s true. I always hear from God during painful situations. I hear from Him during the good times but not as loud and plain as during the pain.
