I just finished reading a chapter on God’s incomparable ways in Cynthia Heald’s book “A Woman’s Journey to the Heart of God.” This chapter encourages the reader to trust that God’s ways are higher than our ways, and we need to trust that He knows what He’s doing. She quotes Francis de Sales:
“Do not look forward to the changes and chances of this life in fear. Rather look at them with full hope that as they arise, God, whose you are, will deliver you out of them. He has kept you hitherto; do you but hold fast to His dear hand, and He will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand, He will bear you in His arms….Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow, and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.”
The author reminds us that we need to endure whatever may come our way so that it can produce in us the character of our Lord Jesus. And, our enduring doesn’t go unnoticed by our Father — in James 1:12, we are told that we will receive the crown of life when we have stood the test. And, as the author writes (and what is so encouraging to me through the whole process) is that “He strengthens us in the process of enduring, and He blesses us for enduring.”
Oh, my goodness, how great is that? He’s going to go through the trial with me and then bless me for making it through. How can I go wrong?
