All right. I have been visiting this blog for a little while now. At first I thought that the whole concept of decluttering one item a day seemed like a good one. Then I thought that I would never keep up with the challenge. And then I’ve reread some of her posts, and I’ve decided to take the challenge.
She’s several weeks into it…but I will be starting tomorrow (hmmm, that’s why the post is titled Gettin’ Ready!) by pitching at least one item a day. Or giving one item away. But SOMEHOW my flat will have one less unused item in it each day for a year. Yikes. That’s a long commitment! (I may need some words of encouragement along the way…)
Not sure what we do when we’re not home — like next week when we’re BACK to Budapest to attempt to get our visas. Maybe I’ll just put an item or two somewhere for our houseguests to pitch!
The rules for this challenge are simple, as posted by SAHMmy:
Toss, Donate, or Sell one item from your home every single day for one year.
No rules.
No advice.
Just a simple challenge that may give your declutterbug its wings–betcha can’t stop at just one thing!
I’ll list my success daily in between regular posts. Please share your success in the comments!

Anyone care to join me??!! (I wish I had started this when I was pitching spices!)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I could use this sort of encouragement. Funny, as I initially read this my mind translated it to be one item a week–which seemed SO doable. But then the ‘fog cleared’ and I realized it is one item a DAY! Whoa–that’s a challenge indeed. Does one piece of paper a day count? Ha!
Hmmmm….I am considering this! It would be a great challenge since we are planning to leave in the Fall. Cleaning out the basement and having a big yard sale should help this project along! I am excited to see your journey! Keep us posted!
Connie: One piece of paper a day counts!
Deanna: This will be EASY for you as you sort through your home!
I’m thinking gifts count…fixing something to become useful…whatever reduces clutter — unwanted stuff!
Um, can you make sure you don’t throw away/get rid of any of my things still laying around? Actually, pack it all in a suitcase and bring it with you! That should help in your goal.
OK I’m up for the challenge! My problem is, were do I start!
Count me in. I’ll tell Charlie as an accountability measure…
Decluttering…wow…I was just eating my breakfast watching an organizational show on home & garden TV and it always gets me motivated! I pray that your trip for the Visa’s is successful this time! Jason will be returning to Ukraine Monday and it looks like Grant and I will not be able to. We are going to try to meet him at the JFK airport to fly from there home with him. Sure do wish we could see ya again, but we will send lots of hugs for you by Jason
Luv~ Melanie
Anna: I thought this might make you a bit nervous. I’ll ask before I pitch anything that I think might be yours!
Ann: This will be much more fun with others doing it. If you go to the SAHMmy site you can see the kinds of things that she’s thrown away over the first weeks of her challenge. Anything goes!
Lynne: Your home didn’t look like it needed decluttering, but I’ll trust that you actually have 365 things to dispose of! YIKES — with Jim and Charlie BOTH knowing what we’re doing…well, we’re really in now! And for the long haul!
Melanie: Sounds like a good compromise for you — meeting the plane in New York. Still part of the adventure… We’ll be anxious to see Jason when he returns to Kyiv WITH the kids…we won’t be in the city o Monday, unfortunately. If he thinks he might need Jeanne once he actually gets the kids to Kyiv, be sure to give her a heads up! Or maybe Sergiy is planning to stay with him until he actually gets on the flight!
I love the idea of asking housesitters to keep it up while you’re off
Thanks for joining the Challenge and wearing the badge! It’s easy to jump in anytime–and if you fall off the wagon just hop back on; I’ll be here!
SAHMmy: Thanks for the encouragement!
Good!! I just got rid of a huge bag of home school material today–now I’m on a roll and sorting through more stuff. Yippee!
No, my house doesn’t need de-cluttering, but I am prone (as you know) to hang on to things with sentimental value. My closet is the last vestige of the old Lynne. No more! Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also…
Connie: Hooray! I do like that there’s a few of us in this thing together. Your excitement will keep me motivated…
Lynne: Sing it! (Do you still have the green sweater?!) My closet will be a lot emptier soon as well…
Wayne Burgess’s wife here. He sent me this link with the warning to stay away from his desk! I threw out a packet of sugar from his trip to Ukraine a year ago. I doubt its still good and since we’ll be seeing you all in august, we’ll get more. I actually could throw away a piece of paper from his desk every day for a year and not make a dent! And HE’s the one who complains about the clutter. He should take the challenge. I’ll take it with you. And I’ll stay away from his desk. *sigh*
Teresa: You’re on! I’m amazed at how many of us are joining forces to hold each other accountable. I’m going to post what I remove from the homefront each day, so feel free to add a comment each day with what you, too, have pitched! Hello to Wayne, and, yes, I look forward to meeting you this summer. (If you get to the end of the challenge and need some more “clutter”…well, Wayne, you’d better clear your desk yourself!!)
